Medavakkam flyover: Land acquisition expedited

The State Highways Department has expedited land acquisition process for the construction of a flyover at the Medavakkam intersection to ease congestion there.

Shop owners and residents have started demolishing buildings on their own to retrieve as many as items as possible, including steel and woodwork. The department too has begun bringing down structures in the areas.

According to officials, notices were issued to property owners long before the project was announced in 2012. The flyover would come up at the intersection of Velachery Main Road and Perumbakkam Main Road. It is estimated to cost around Rs. 145 crore, officials said.

Jayaram Panneerselvam of Kulasekara Alwar Street said the project, announced four years ago, was finally taking shape now. Once completed, traffic on multiple directions between Tambaram, Velachery and Sholinganallur would be easy. Velachery Main Road, a 21-km State Highway (SH No. 48) connecting Tambaram with Saidapet via Velachery, was very narrow at some spots in Pallikaranai, Narayanapuram and Sembakkam and was also caught in legal hurdles, residents pointed out.

Land acquisition issues stall Eastern Bypass work

Another project that can significantly improve traffic flow on Velachery Main Road and Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road) is the Eastern Bypass.

The proposed 7.6-km road will originate at Rajakilpakkam and pass through Madambakkam, Mappedu, Tiruvanchery and Puthur villages before joining GST Road, a national highway (NH 45), at Peerkankaranai. The Highways Department has completed widening work between Selaiyur and Mappedu whereas problems related to land acquisition beyond it and till Peerkankaranai have stalled proceedings.

The extent of land acquisition for this project was 59.45 acres, of which 28.7 acres came under ‘patta’ category. K. Raman of Perungalathur said that already Peerkankaranai and Sadhanandapuram residents had appealed to the Highways Department to acquire only government land and drop any move to acquire ‘patta’ land as several hundred houses came under the original survey for the Eastern Bypass project.
